Only a little boy David...Only a babbling brook...Only a little boy David...Five little stones he took...
I love the story of David and Goliath. This is one of those stories that when I ask children on Sunday morning to name their favorite Bible story, the story of David and Goliath is one of the top five chosen. David, chosen by God to be the next King of Israel, demonstrates an offensive faith when faced with life's trials. David knew who the master and commander of his life was and had complete devotion to Jehovah.
As a great general would lead an army, God prepared David to defeat the scary Philistine and inspire the army of Israel. First was the battle before the battle: David was a shepherd and a protector. He would fight off lions and bears to protect his flock.
Next he had confidence in his relationship with God. He did not need the world, in this case Saul, helping him. In I Samuel 17:39-40, Saul dressed him in armor, but David said,
"'I cannot go in these,' he said to Saul, 'because I am not used to them.' So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine."David stuck to what he knew and believed. Then, with the defeat of Goliath, David inspired the army of Israel that they were able to defeat the Philistine army.
Is God truly the master and commander of your life? As Jehovah-Sabaoth - Commander, God prepares us for the Goliaths that may come our way. There are smaller battles to prepare us for the big ones. We need to strengthen our relationship with God and put on His armor and we will find that it will fit much better than what the world will provide. Then, because of His glory, we will be a great inspiration and give confidence to our family and friends to fight in the battle with us. In a world where it seems like the odds are against us, it only takes one small stone to inspire a nation for God.
