A Banner Day

Today's Reading: Exodus 17:8-15

After an exciting day, our grandparents would exclaim, “That was a banner day!”  I think that, as Christians, we should revive this saying.  In Exodus 17 we see Moses having a banner day.  It was a day in which God showed up for his people.

The battle was fierce.  Moses stood on the hill with his hands lifted to the One that had brought them so far.  When exhaustion would set in his hands would lower and the Israelites would falter.  Aaron and Hur stood on either side of their humble leader and held up his hands to the God who was their Banner.

What a poignant picture that paints of the fellowship of believers.  At times, we all grow weary.  The factors that war against us can be relentless.  It is a struggle to do and to honor all that we are called to be.  And yet, we have been blessed with brothers and sisters that will stand by our side and hold up our arms to Jehovah Nissi, our Banner.

This passage challenges us to pull our eyes from the battle that rages and seek out the one who needs us to hold up their arms.  In doing so, we will remind our own hearts that He is near.  Today is a Banner day!
